"Attached are photos I took of one of the air raid siren
polls in Northridge. Many of us who went to school in the 50's, 60's and 70's still remember the sounds of the Air Raid Polls. This one is located on Reseda and Lassen. We used to have one near my elementary school (Napa Street), but when I went over there to take a photo the
city had removed it. Enjoy" Richard Hilton

If I remember correctly, they used to test these sirens on the first or last Fridays of the month. At 10am I think. Jerry

I love these things. Such an awesome reminder of a (hopefully) bygone era. My little boy is fascinated with the inoperable sirens.

I too grew up with the Air Raid Sirens, although I lived in West LA. The siren system (including the SFV) was operated by the County of LA, and indeed 10AM last Friday of the month was the testing. The last test was Jan 1986, after which all sirens were never again tested. The Grand daddy of all sirens; the Chrysler 6-horn behemoth up at the Cerro Negro Lookout station above La Crescenta, is still there, in it's 6000-lb glory. The pole-mount Federal 500 and SD10 sirens, are disappearing one-by-one as developers are required to remove them pursuant to building permit approvals. I am a siren collector and restorer, and I have a few of them restored and operational on our ranch just west of Moorpark in Ventura County.
