30 Years Ago Today - Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster

Thirty years ago today, the space shuttle Challenger blasted off at 11:38 a.m. ET. Then, 73 seconds after liftoff, a fireball engulfed the shuttle.

As a horrified America watched on live television, the orbiter broke apart, dooming its crew of seven, including high school teacher Christa McAuliffe, who was supposed to become the first civilian in space.

The accident, which was eventually blamed on failed rocket O-rings as well as pressure within NASA to keep launches on schedule, forced a reassessment of the shuttle program and the dangers inherent in human spaceflight.

NASA's has a Day of Remembrance that honors the Challenger victims as well as the lost crews of the Columbia, Apollo 1 and other astronauts killed in the line of duty.

Here are some Space Shuttle Facts from NASA - click HERE.

What do you remember about that day?

Where were you when you heard the news?

How were you affected?

Speaker Series: Artist, Akram Namdarian (1/30/16)

The Museum of the San Fernando Valley invites you to meet the January 2016 featured artist, Akram Namdarian.

Namdarian is a local San Fernando Valley artist that works with a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic painting, ceramics and even metals (copper). She has used art as a way to heal herself while battling health issues. Her art stems from an ardent desire to depict a universal human spirit as the constant communicator. Motifs of family, friends, and individuals in dialogue with each other and with the viewer, saturate her work. From her experimental coloring techniques to her wide array of media, she focuses on capturing humankind in its purest form, with all its defects and realism, to find a point of communion, an act of communication that transcends all cultures and is ancient in its birth with humanity. Learn more about Namdarin's work on Saturday, January 30, 2015 from 2pm to 3pm.

CELEBRATE 105TH ANNIVERSARY OF VAN NUYS ON 2/21/16

Join us as we celebrate the 105th Anniversary of Van Nuys by taking a historic walking tour!

The development entity known as The Syndicate began the process in 1910, but William Paul Whitsett saw it through to the end. Originally a barley field, Van Nuys became a prosperous center of City Government, agriculture and industry.

Come explore what remains to be appreciated: original 1911 buildings hidden beneath modern facades, first churches, a civic center with many special revelations, one of the main hubs of social and official activity, the Women's Club building, Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monuments #201, #202, and #911, and National Register of Historic Places Monument #2509.

Learn about the origin of the Daily News and the company which was a nationwide maker of silent movie theatre organs. Who were Hobart Johnstone Whitley, Wayne E. Bechtelheimer and Whitley Van Nuys Huffaker? Relive "Wednesday Nights on Van Nuys Boulevard." We will have historic photographs and stories to share as we wander this surprisingly historic San Fernando Valley treasure.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Spoke at Canoga Park High School January 15, 1961

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the guest of Pastor Fred Doty and the Woodland Hills Community Church. Dr. King preached a Sunday morning sermon at the church, and then addressed the local community at the high school in the evening. Canoga Park High School's Assembly Hall on January 15, 1961 because the church needed a larger venue for the event.

Pastor Doty invited Martin Luther King Jr. to the west San Fernando Valley after reading King's book, Stride Toward Freedom, The Montgomery Bus Boycott Story. Doty was so inspired by what he read, he actually called Dr. King's church the night he finished the book.

Click HERE to go to page and then click on VIDEO ARROW to listen to a portion of his speech at Canoga Park High School.

His words still ring true today.

CANOGA is the oldest high school in the west San Fernando Valley. It opened with 14 students and 3 teachers on October 4, 1914. Canoga was originally named Owensmouth High School.

In 1914, the High School was located on the second floor of Owensmouth Grammar School. This is the present-day site of Canoga Park Elementary.
